Virconia heard the low rumble first, but in her sleep, it sounded like the low rumble of the earth that she was so used to in Netherland. Then it occurred to her where she was, and she shot up in a flash. She wasn’t in Netherland, and that deep rumble in the earth on the surface meant something entirely different.

“Wake up!” she yelled as she turned and tried to see the location of the impending attack.

Just as her eyes, able to see so clearly in the dark, settled on the Rock Giant, a large boulder clipped her right arm, causing her to spin around. The boulder hit the wagon Estryl and Aldrina shared, splintering its front wheel and causing it to tip a little. Estryl quickly climbed out just as Elder Martan and Stranick climbed out of the other one. All three were ready for battle.

Elder Martan yelled, “Where are they?”

Virconia pointed beyond the light of the fire. “One is there to your left. Another is over here, directly in front of me, and a third is up the slope. That is the one lobbing boulders. Oh! He just tossed another – Aldrina!”

Aldrina flung herself out the back of the wagon just an instant before it was crushed under the weight of a boulder nearly the same size as the wagon.

Elder Martan and Stranick raced off to the left to fight that giant, while Estryl stood beside Aldrina, both unsure of what to do.

Virconia stared at them for a split second. “Don’t just stand there! Use your magic.”

Both women just sputtered at her, “That’s not how our magic works!”

Virconia didn’t have time to process their response as the giant that was in front of her moved into the light of the fire and swung its heavy club at her. She easily sidestepped it and slashed her drawn blades across the top if its exposed hand. Not waiting for the giant to retaliate, she focused her attention on the hand holding the weapon and drove her blades into it as deep as she could. It’s hand now useless, the giant dropped its club but, in a fury, tried to stomp on Virconia. She sidestepped it easily but stepped right into the path of another tossed boulder. This one caught her on her left shoulder and threw her into the air.

She landed at Aldrina’s feet in a crumpled heap, and she knew her arm, ribs, and shoulder were broken. Unable to catch her breath, she felt herself getting dizzy and didn’t realize that in landing she had cracked her skull on a small rock. She heard Estryl shout in anger, just as Aldrina knelt beside her. As she started to pass out, she thought she heard the distinct war call of one of the White Elf clans. She hoped she was right, because this small band didn’t stand a chance against three Rock Giants on their own.
